The football week just gone was a positive one for myself as a Manchester United fan, we took another step towards the Premiership Title and gave ourselves an advantage in our Champions League 2nd Leg tie against Arsenal this week. Unfortunately Liverpool also triumphed over Newcastle, sending a much loved Northern team closer to the Coca Cola Championship.
However, although that game for Liverpool fans would have left smiles on their faces regarding the win, I would imagine they would be rather concerned and annoyed at Joey Barton, who maliciously took down Xabi Alonso, who was consequently stretchered off. Many pundits and fans alike praise Barton's ability as a footballer, which I too would agree with, he is a talented football player. However, I believe that he should stop be giving chances by the FA and be banned from football.
Well ok, maybe not banned for life but I think the FA should certainly just stop handing out these temporary bans, slaps on the wrist and feather across the knuckles. Barton has made several contentious tackles and outbursts in the past and has been given the same punishment over and over again. I think the FA need to take much more serious action about calming down this ex-convict and putting him in his place and let him know he can't just brake people's legs left, right and centre!
Even though I am a Man Utd fan and obviously have much higher than average hatred of Liverpool FC, I never like to see a footballer get badly injured. I felt queezy at the sight of Eduaro's leg getting violated and today was another "look-away" moment when Alonso was mauled by Barton. I know some Newcastle fans may come back with "Sam, you can't say Barton should be banned when Roy Keane was a much dirtier player". Well, to them I say, there's a difference. Keane was good. Roy Keane has also never spent time behind bars and provided hours of footballing entertainment.
Joey Barton is nothing but a mere spoilt little boy who, whenever he gets frustrated and his team starts losing, loses his rag and lashes out at footballers with some actual talent and skill. One things for sure: Boys got issues....

I would like to explore the comparison between Barton and Keane further as I believe you have left out a lot of information on Keane. I don't condone the type of tackle that Barton committed but it was an action committed whilst playing for a team that were not only losing the game but losing the battle for survival. Still this does not condone his actions but it seems more of an act of desperation opposed to a pre-meditated malicious tackle. Of course I’m alluding to Keane with the back end of my last sentence and with good reason. A 2001 Manchester derby, Norwegian Alf-line Haland was taken of injured as a result of after a blatant knee high challenge from Manchester United captain Roy Keane. The tackle in itself was shocking much like the Barton tackle. However Keane goes a step further saying in his autobiography 'I'd waited long enough. I fucking hit him hard. The ball was there (I think). Take that you cunt. And don't ever stand over me sneering about fake injuries.' This alone begs the question what type of human being is Keane? Keane shows a blatant lack of content for a fellow professional by showing here he didn't even know if the ball was there not that it mattered he was blinded by his lust for revenge. Keane's horror challenge was revenge for the Norwegian accusing Keane of feigning injury to escape punishment. Ironically Keane injured his ligaments by trying to trip Haland which happened four years prior to Kean's challenge. His challenge consequently left the Norwegian no choice but to retire from football. Given Keane was a good player but that still doesn't justify the actions committed in the manner they were committed.
Furthermore I realise Joey Barton has spent time in prison for common assault but this again is not to far of a comparison with Keane who was in fact facing charges of common assault, a public order offence and criminal damage. Keane’s legal predicament was saved by the victim’s stupidity of talking to the press when advised not then denying it to the police. Not a smart move but it was enough to deem his account untrustworthy, thus clearing Keane of charges. But one must contemplate the different outcome if the victim had just listened.
‘Joey Barton is nothing but a mere spoilt little boy’ possibly so but yet again Keane is not without his own tantrums when he doesn’t get what he wants or feels he deserves. The following quote is but a taste of what Keane is like when he throws his toys out the pram; ‘Mick, you're a liar... you're a fucking wanker. I didn't rate you as a player, I don't rate you as a manager, and I don't rate you as a person. You're a fucking wanker and you can stick your World Cup up your arse. The only reason I have any dealings with you is that somehow you are the manager of my country! You can stick it up your bollocks!’ This brutal verbal attack of then Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy was due to his dissatisfaction with the team’s preparation. This verbal onslaught has nothing to do with why he’s annoyed but is merely an assault on an individual he clearly does not like. To add to this there is also his outburst in which his own team mates were the subject and not just content with his team mates he turns to the fans and decides to insult them by calling them the now famous prawn sandwich brigade.
One thing that is certain about Keane is that the boy sure does have issues...
Granted Keane had his moments of insanity but i do think you are getting caught up in comparison between Barton and Keane.
The point Sam is making is that much more than this comparison. You douche!
